WJO FUNDS
WJO Operations Fund
The day to day operations include hiring musicians and guest artists, paying concert costs (venue, sound engineers, graphic design, printing programs, box office costs) and boring things like paying for our website and our phone bills. |
WJO Education and Outreach Fund
A mandate of the WJO is to make direct and meaningful connections with eager young jazz students, giving them valuable tools, skills and inspiration to help them succeed. Our website hosts jazz instructional videos and 'play-along with the WJO' pieces by Manitoban composers. Our Education and Outreach programs include inviting school and community big bands to play before WJO concerts, giving these students complimentary tickets, offering heavily discounted subscriptions through schools, holding big band workshops, performing at local schools, and organizing honour jazz bands involving around 60 talented emerging musicians. |
WJO Special Projects Fund
The WJO reaches outside our borders and down through time by producing CDs and promoting big band music. The WJO presently has six CDs of mostly original music. We will release our seventh album in January 2024 and hope to record our eighth CD right away. Most of our recordings feature original music by Canadian jazz composers. We have also been instrumental (pun intended) in creating a jazz alliance to share music scores, program ideas and encourage other big bands throughout Canada and the world. |

Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra Endowment Fund
at The Winnipeg Foundation
We are overjoyed to announce that, with the help of an anonymous donor, the WJO has opened an endowment fund. With matching funds from The Winnipeg Foundation, other granting bodies and our loyal donors, this fund will make a meaningful impact. The income the WJO will receive from the interest of this fund will contribute to the WJO’s stability and sustainability.
We know many of you plan to make a donation over the next few months. If you are able to add a little extra for the endowment fund, we would be eternally grateful - because the support from this fund will continue to support the WJO forever!
You can donate by calling the WJO at 204-632-5299. You can also make your donation on The Winnipeg Foundation website by clicking on the GIVE icon and choosing the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra.
This endowment, along with your regular donations and the support of funding bodies, will ensure continued music-making by the WJO.

The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra welcomes and shares its performance and creation of music - a universal language to all people irrespective of culture, race, sexuality, ability, language and gender.
Music is an agent of hope. A dynamic and valuable device that helps us to heal and to bring us together. The First Peoples of Canada understood this and used music to reunite, resolve and reconcile. In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge that WJO activities take place on Treaty Territory – land that was maintained and earnestly cared for by Indigenous peoples before European settlement. Manitoba is the original lands of Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and is the homeland of the Métis Nation. We acknowledge that Winnipeg benefits daily from Treaty 3 water that comes from Shoal Lake 40. It is with sincere sentiment that we recognize the mistakes of our recent and distant past. In working towards a Canada that benefits us all, we commit to seeking a greater understanding of Canada’s diverse cultural relationships through continued work with Indigenous communities; we commit to live in ways that honour and respect the treaties that were made on these territories; and we commit to stewarding the land in harmony for all who will come after us.
