WJO FUNDS

WJO Operations Fund

The day to day operations include hiring musicians and guest artists, paying concert costs (venue, sound engineers, graphic design, printing programs, box office costs) and boring things like paying for our website and our phone bills.
WJO Education and Outreach Fund

A mandate of the WJO is to make direct and meaningful connections with eager young jazz students, giving them valuable tools, skills and inspiration to help them succeed.

When we could not hold in-person educational sessions we started to post educational materials online to help jazz students. On our website are ten jazz instructional videos and seven pieces by Manitoban composers for students to learn by playing along with the WJO recording while looking at the score. We continue to add to our online support for jazz students and have held zoom sessions with schools to replace our in-person workshops.

Prior to Covid our Education and Outreach programs included inviting school and community big bands to play before WJO concerts, giving these students complimentary tickets, offering heavily discounted subscriptions through schools, holding half day big band workshops involving around 500 students in a usual year, performing at local schools for the community, and organizing three honour jazz bands involving around 60 talented emerging musicians.
WJO Special Projects Fund

The WJO reaches outside our borders and down through time by producing CDs and promoting big band music.

The WJO presently has six CDs of almost all original music: Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, Steppin' Out, Suite Messiah, Suite 150, Twisting Ways, and Voices: A Musical Heritage. We will start recording our seventh album in the winter of 2023
. We try to record original music by Canadian jazz composers every year towards our next album.

We have also been instrumental (pun intended) in creating a jazz alliance to share music scores, program ideas and encourage other big bands throughout Canada and the world.
