Great Moments in Jazz - Paris Edition

SUNDAY, November 6, 2022, 2:00 pm
Centre Cultural Franco-Manitobain (CCFM) - 340 Provencher Blvd.

It was the spring of 1949 when rising star trumpeter Miles Davis made his first trip to Paris. Like so many others, the city made a lasting impression. I loved being in Paris, said Davis. I have never felt like that in my life since. What is it about La Ville Lumièrthat makes such a lasting impression on jazz musicians? So strong is this attraction that Sidney Bechet, Dexter Gordon, Kenny Clarke and countless others would choose to make Paris their home. And as that talent congregated along the River Seine, heartfelt reunions, legendary performances and one-of-a-kind recordings were made. Explore these legendary moments with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra as we take a musical journey to an oft overlooked hotbed of jazz.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2022, 1:00 pm
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2022, 7:30 pm
West End Cultural Centre (WECC) - 586 Ellice Avenue

This Christmas season, the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra is proud to present Dr. Seuss' much-loved festive fairy tale 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas'! Adapting the classic 1966 cartoon, Winnipeg actor and comedian Quinn Greene has some very big, fluffy shoes to fill in order to bring the great, green Grinch to life!
And, you can't have the Grinch without the stellar original soundtrack adapted and presented by the WJO. Featuring a jazz spin on greats like 'Welcome Christmas' and 'Trim Up The Tree', this big band will have you boogying under boughs of holly and fa-la-la-lalling all over yourself dancing to many more compositions they've added to the usual Grinch fare!
Joining Quinn and the band is the extremely talented jazz vocalist Helen White. Helen, a Winnipeg jazz veteran, producer and teacher, will have you singing along as she performs all your favourites such as 'You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch' and Faith Hill's timeless 'Where Are You Christmas?'.
