Tickets to WJO 25th Anniversary Celebration
WJO returns to the West End Cultural Centre - where it all began-with a very special guest: clarinetist, saxophonist and WJO co-founder Sasha Boychouk. Swinging hits by Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Duke Ellington alongside WJO favourites from years past will make this a silver anniversary to remember.

The most famous band in jazz was playing empty rooms in the early 1950s. As jazz fans turned to cutting edge bebop over the old big-band swing, Ellington was forced to pay his band members out of pocket. That all changed at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival and a chaotic night that lives in infamy. Join the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, featuring saxophonist Niall Cade, as we pay tribute to the remarkable night that revived Duke Ellington's Big Band, landed him on the cover of TIME Magazine and rocketed him back to super stardom.

 Women’s Day
Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 7:30 pm
West End Cultural Centre (WECC) 586 Ellice Ave

Tickets to Women's Day
The timeline of jazz history is dotted with talented women who helped shape the trajectory of the artform, often without getting their due. Mary Lou Williams was a prolific composer and pianist as was Lil Harden-Armstrong before her. Guitarists Mary Osborne and Emily Remler  were respected and busy bebop musicians. Vocalist and saxophonist Vi Redd was a tour de force. And trombonist Melba Liston was a gifted player who played in Dizzy Gillespie's big band alongside numerous other projects. The list goes on and on and covers every corner of the globe. Winnipeg is no exception and in celebration of International Women's Day the WJO will feature River City's talented women in jazz.

The WJO is thrilled to be back for the 2022/23 season to continue our tradition of classic arrangements, new compositions, surprise guests, old friends, talented young instrumentalists and vocalists, and themes that we think will pique your interest!
