Hello WJO fans! I'm so excited to play for you at Preservation Hall Eatery and Bar on Tuesday, September 22. Joining me are my long-time friends and collaborators guitarist Aaron Shorr and bassist Julian Bradford for two sets of music by some of the great saxophonists that have inspired, amazed, and pushed me over the years. We'll play music by Sonny Rollins, fresh off his two-year sabbatical atop the Williamsburg Bridge. We'll explore the gentle side of John Coltrane alongside Charlie Parker's fresh, uplifting, yet honest approach to the blues. As well, the trio tackles music by Billy Strayhorn, who's music was a perfect fit for the lush, velvety tone of Johnny Hodges. We'll pay hommage to Cannonball Adderley's relentless east coast swing and contrast that with the cool west coast sound of Paul Desmond. And the show wouldn't be complete without showcasing composition masterpieces by Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter. Please come out to Preservation Hall on Tuesday in support of the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra for an amazing dinner and great jazz. All in a safe, socially-distanced setting. See you there! - Neil Watson, alto saxophone
