The annual Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra Honour Jazz Band program (WHJB) provides students from across the province the opportunity to gather together for a shared experience of fast-paced musical challenge and growth in the context of a big band. Participants will work closely with some of Manitoba’s finest jazz educators and performers.
The 2016 Honour Jazz Band auditions have been completed,
and once again we have three great ensembles.

Everyone of the students that auditioned were capable of being involved
and there were several difficult choices. Thankfully I had Neil Watson helping me out with auditions this year.

I will be e-mailing each student, but I want to especially encourage those students that didn't make the ensembles this year to audition next year,
as many of you were very, very close.

Congratulations!

Richard Gills
Artistic Director, WJO
Manitoba students are eligible to audition for the opportunity to perform in one of three bands: Junior, Intermediate or Senior and are selected base on the strength of their audition, which includes improvisation, and excerpts (and sight reading in live auditions). Rehearsals take place over the course of three fast-paced and exciting days in preparation for a final concert as part of the TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival.
Bands and Eligibility
  • Junior (1 – 2 years jazz experience)
  • Intermediate (3 – 4 years jazz experience)
  • Senior (4-5+ years jazz experience)
